We’re Janice and George Mucalov, lawyers by profession, now writers and the legal duo behind the popular “You and the Law”® columns. We have all the skills to bring the law to life for a wide readership – your potential clients!

Do we get “plain language”? You bet. Do we understand newspaper readers and Internet viewers? Yes.

Do we know how to turn the law from “boring” to “fascinating”? Readers give us a thumbs up.

George has many years of law practice experience, and Janice has won four Kenneth R. Wilson Awards (the “Oscars” in Canadian business writing) for her legal articles.

Lawyers, writers and Lord Denning fans

Janice and George - Vancouver (2)

We met as lawyers in a boutique law firm in Calgary. After we moved to Vancouver, Janice swapped her legal career for life as a freelance writer and created “You and the Law”®. George continued to practice corporate and commercial real estate law for many years until recently joining Janice.

Lord Denning’s judgments inspire us – remember “Old Peter Beswick was a coal merchant in Eccles…”?

Previously, we worked together as co-authors of a regular business law column for The Vancouver Sun newspaper. We’ve also jointly written many legal articles for Canadian consumer magazines like Westworld and B.C. Business and, more recently, for publications geared for lawyers, such as the Canadian Bar Association’s PracticeLink.

“You and the Law”®

Our “You and the Law”® columns help demystify the law and explain how it affects readers in their everyday lives – at home, at work and at play. Most columns are about the law in British Columbia. Law firms sponsor our “You and The Law”® columns in newspapers throughout B.C. and also post them on their websites (as blog posts or articles) to build their online presence. If we weren’t lawyers, we’d be full-time travel writers!

When not brushing up on the law and helping with law firm marketing in B.C. , we love to travel. You’ll find us bicycling around temples in Myanmar, scuba diving in Indonesia and getting happily lost in Italian cities – even canoeing with crocodiles in Africa…

Our travel stories and photos are published in leading North American magazines and newspapers (e.g, The Vancouver Sun and Province newspapers, NUVO magazine, TravelAge West). You can read about our travel adventures on our travel blog, Sand In My Suitcase.
